Super Easy I-Spy Birthday Cake

Becca comes up with some pretty creative cake ideas.  So far she's asked for a cat cake, a Ms. Frizzle book cake, and this year she came up with her best yet.  She asked for an I-Spy Cake.

Becca has loved all things I-Spy since she was tiny.  Over two years ago I posted about Seek-and-Find books being some of her favorites...and they still are.  (I love these board book versions for little ones.)

She came up with the idea a month or two before her birthday, so whenever I found little trinkets or toys the right size, I put them aside.  (You know those little toys that always seem to be underfoot and never have a good place to be put away anyway...this kept them out of the way for a while too.)  When the time came, I had enough for 4 or 5 I-Spy cakes, so I decided to stick to objects that had some connection to the #4, since Becca turned 4.

Some of these objects could work for any age...like the four paperclips hooked together, or the four safety pins linked together.  Four beads inside a miniature jar, etc.

The total list of items included are:
Button with 4 holes
Domino with 4's on it,
Bell
4 paper clips
4 safety pins
Lego with 4 dots,
Dinosaur, kitty cat, mouse, goat, little man (each have 4 limbs)
Pea in a pod pendant with four beads
Various dice with the 4 side up,
Tape measure with 4 inches cut off (these were left over from some old quilting frames we dismantelled since I machine quilt now.)
Frog with four feet and each foot had four toes
Screw with 4 notches
Foot from the Cootie came with four wheels on the roller skate

We thought about putting items on the side of the cake too, but I thought the top was busy enough that I didn't want the cake to be completely overwhelmed.

Becca had a lot of fun figuring out where the four was for each object.

Becca also wanted a "party," so we invited friends over for a gift-free play-date with cake.  Mostly we just let the kids play doing whatever they wanted to, but we also bought some stickers and had them make I-Spy plates to eat their cake on.

Then we used the rest of the stickers to put into Easter Eggs and had them do a little I-Spy egg hunt.

A great theme also calls for a great outfit, so I made Becca this I-Spy Skirt...which deserves it's own post...and some better pictures.  She loved the skirt, but wasn't in the mood to model it.

The kids had a lot of fun and the only real time I put into getting ready for it was decorating the cake and cleaning up the house enough to have friends over.  And it turned out really good we kept it so simple because later that afternoon I had to leave unexpectedly to go say goodbye to my Granddad.
