For signing up, they sent us 6 fat 1/8th of Riley Blake Basics prints in different colors. (Everyone got the same colors and prints.) Then we could add in any solids or other Riley Blake fabrics to finish our quilts.
Ever since seeing V & Co's Ombre quilts a year or so ago, I've been wanting to try some ombre fabric. It turns out that Riley Blake has their own ombre solids line, so I ordered 1 yard of Riley Bake Green Ombre fabric. (I wanted to choose a color that wasn't in the fat 1/8th bundle for some contrast.)
I also had some Riley Blake Geekly Chic Glasses in Lavender from Quilt Sandwich Fabrics. The color seemed to mesh well with the others and I though the glasses brought a little more personality to the mix.
After measuring my fat 1/8ths, I figured that 5" squares would maximize the number of squares I could get with a minimum of waste left over, so I chopped everything up into 5-inch squares.
I really love the effect that the ombre fabric has in it. I ended up using only 5 of the fabrics we were given. The 6th was wide white and grey stripes that just didn't speak to me, so I left them out.
With so much color on the front, I decided to go with something low volume on the back and settled on Riley Blake Geekly Chic glasses in cream. I had all but decided to keep things really easy and just do a whole piece for the back, but then I saw the little pile of scraps...all trimmed to the same size...and figured I'd do an accent strip. I'm really happy with how the whole thing turned out.
It's a little random, but it was fun to make a quilt just to experiment and not try to make it to please anyone except myself.
Fun to finally have the sun out and to see the light shining through it.
It's listed here in my shop...but for now I finally took down my Modern Halloween Quilt and this one is now hanging in my entry way for a fun Spring Quilt.

Well it definitely pleases me, and I say Anson thinks it turned out mighty fine too judging by that smile. I have trouble envisioning how the fabrics will all come together when I go shopping. I'm thinking maybe I need to just buy one of those "grab bags" of scraps from an online shop somewhere and just set out to sewing ...... random seems to turn out pretty good!
ReplyDeleteIt really looks great with the ombre green! Anson looks like he really likes it, too! There have been a lot of quilts posted up today on the MQG site. Months and months might be too long of a deadline for me, haha. I finished hiding threads and quickly snapped some outside photos to post up earlier today. I love the geekly chic glasses print, ordered a bit of that for myself :)
