Even since our school librarian introduced us to Mo Willems and the Elephant and Piggie books (affiliate link), we've been huge fans. (We love The Pigeon books as well.) The Elephant and Piggie books are rather like graphic novels, for early readers and are so funny that they pull the most reluctant readers in. For some reason they're a bit harder to run across in thrift stores and such (probably because no one wants to get rid of them), so we've ordered most of ours online (affiliate link) or request them from our library.
My sister knows we are fans because we've shared the books with her kids. So when we were thrift store shopping a few weeks ago, she noticed this Elephant and Piggie shirt for me, I knew immediately it would make the perfect Kindergarten dress for Miss Becca.
Becca's favorite clothes involve wearing "soft pants" (meaning knit pants and leggings) and knit dresses.
Since I made this for Becca a couple days ago, she wanted to wear it everyday and is careful not to get it dirty...so she can keep wearing it. Plus, she asked and pestered and begged for us to go out and take pictures of it (rather than me having to talk her into it or bribe her into cooperating).
I think the whole thing took me about 15 Minutes to make. It might take a bit longer your first time around, but it really is fast.
And the only supplies you'll need are an adult sized T-shirt, a sewing machine, and typical basic sewing supplies (scissors, thread, pins, etc).
I used the Free T-Shirt Dress pattern that I posted 4 years ago. (Wow! Hard to believe I've been blogging that long. You can get the FREE T-shirt Dress Pattern here. And you can go to my T-shirt Dress Tutorial here for the instructions. The dress is sized to be about a size 5. The pattern fit my my oldest from about 5-7 years old because we made it long. The sleeves in this pattern are roomy enough, that you could make the dress a bit wider and still use the same size sleeves for a slightly bigger child. You'll find the main limit to making this dress too much bigger is simply the length of the T-shirt.
I have a feeling there are more T-shirt dresses in her future...
