Monster Cupcakes

Firecracker wanted a princess birthday party and princess cupcakes to take to her class.  I convinced her that maybe it would be more fun to do different for the two...meaning I wasn't all that enthusiastic about making princess cake/cupcakes at all, much less twice in a week...and all the kids she was inviting to her party are in her class.  And anyway, this one looks like it could be a princess, don't you think?

So I convinced her to take these monster cupcakes instead.  They were inspired by the string and fuzzy monster cupcakes from "What's New Cupcake" which we'd checked out of the library.  You can see a video tutorial for the originals here
They were really very easy to make. You don't need anything special to make them...just frosting, food coloring, freezer bags, and google eyes. The directions called for one regular cupcake and one mini cupcake for each monster, which I made. (I always raid the kid's play kitchen for their muffin tin to make mini-cupcakes...it's a real one.) If I were to do this again though, I'd save myself the trouble of the mini ones and use mini-Reese's peanut butter cups in place of the minis.

I had originally bought the suckers and gummy rings to do the eyes they way they were shown in the tutorial above...but I was running out of time, so I just slapped on a bunch of google eyes from our craft stash.  (And saved myself over $5 when I returned the candy!)  I'm not a cupcake purist...I felt okay about putting some non-edibles on.  Just a warning though:  MAKE SURE YOU KNOW YOUR KIDS...these were going to kindergarteners who were old enough not to put them in their mouths, and my younger kids aren't the type to put the google eyes in their mouths.  Firecracker would have when she was younger though, and I know other kids who would...so just be careful.

I can't decide which of them is my favorite.

The pink and purples ones were favorites of the girls...I should have made more of those.

I tried to make them all a little different, because I figured I couldn't make them all the same anyway.
The kindergarteners loved them, and what they did do was take the google eyes and put them on their foreheads to turn into monsters.

And even though Firecracker wasn't thrilled about having her picture taken...she enjoyed the cupcakes with her class.
Which gave me our idea for preschool the next day...and I'll show you that tomorrow You can see that here.  We read the book Monster Mess and turned ourselves into monsters to make cleaning up more fun.

Please show my sponsors some love...

  1. These are hilarious! I especially love that the kids stuck the google eyes on their own foreheads. And that is genius to put a mini-cupcake or a peanut butter cup underneath to make the cupcake taller.

  18. Wonderful!!!! Although, I wouldn't use those eyes directly on any food item, even with a warning for any age...for the obvious reason and since they are not likely food safe...I don't mean to be a damper - maybe you could securely fasten them to food picks or make edible ones with a dollups of white and dark chocolate on parchement until hardened?
