How Firecracker Became a Pirate... {Valentine's Version}

We've been getting some last minute Valentine's preparations ready.
Firecracker and I stitched up these cute Pirate and Eye Patch Valentines (From Mer Mag) on Saturday.

She helped sew 5 or 6 of them and then decided she wanted to write on them while I finished up the sewing.

And she didn't like any of the corny pirate-themed Valentine puns I suggested, so she wrote Arrrrrrgh! on all of them.

I think they turned out great.  We'd planned to sew a sucker onto the back of them...but I forgot to buy them.  I'm making cookies for her class tomorrow, though, so I don't feel too bad.

Firecracker decided a couple weeks ago that she actually likes wearing her eye patch to school.  (Can I just say that I am SOOOOO thankful that NO one has ever said anything mean to her about wearing an eye patch in public...we live in the most awesome place on earth.)  Anyway, since she's now willing to wear the eye patch to school if it gets her out of patching time at home, we decided to play the theme a bit further.  I made her this pirate dress on a whim last May when they did a pirate week studying the letter X (and long before we knew about her lazy eye and need to wear a real eye patch).  I kept meaning to post about it and never got around to it.  (It's made from two thrift store t-shirts...I shortened the one on top and sewed the striped one to the bottom to make the skirt.  I also made her an X-eye patch, since they were studying X.  She refused to wear it...and gave it to one of the boys in her class.

Anyway, we fixed up her pirate dress with a heart shaped eye patch to match the Valentines.

And I took her pirate's booty bag I made to go with her Girly Pirate Halloween costume and added a few felt hearts to it.

Perfect for holding Valentine's until they're delivered...and perfect for bringing them home.  (Except Firecracker is not convinced...she's not sure she wants to use the bag.
I'm hoping to do a few other fun things with the kids for Valentine's Day...but we'll see what I actually manage to get done.

If you're looking for a fun pirate book to read (that has nothing to do with Valentine's Day) we can highly recommend How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long.
If you've got your own child who wears glasses and/or wears an eye patch, you might be interested in following "Little Four Eyes" on Pinterest.  That's where I first saw the Valentine's.

And as one last note...today only (Feb. 14th, 2012)...all the printable flashcards at The Red Kitchen are 50% off.)  You can go here for more details.
