Big Boy Crayon Roll & Full-Size Scripture Tote

After I made Becca's little I-Spy Scripture Purse, I realized that Seth didn't have a scripture tote of his own...and...um...he's 2 years older.  Gotta fix that.  After all, Seth is growing up.

Seth carries around full-sized scriptures, and I wanted the bag to be fun for now with the crayon pockets...
...and functional enough for him to use it a long time with room for a full set of scriptures, pencil, and other pockets.

It's similar to Becca's, but I made it a little more complicated...and since I was really making the whole thing up as I went...there's no tutorial.  I think Seth's favorite pocket is the "secret" one behind the pocket for his Bible...
Man, he crammed it full of scissors, sticky notes, tape and other things.  He'll be super prepared in case his teacher forgets any supplies.

I gave Seth the option to have an I-Spy Scripture case or to use this Making Paper Hats Fabric from the Children at Play line by Sarah Jane.  (I'm not normally one to be that into "designer" fabric, but I ordered a bunch of fabrics from this line as a little Christmas present to myself because I LOVE them so much.  Most of it is destined for a quilt for Anson, but this aqua didn't mesh as well with the colors of the others I ordered, so I'm glad I'll get to look at it a lot as part of Seth's scripture tote.)  I wonder how old he'll be before he realizes there are directions on his scripture bag for actually making paper airplanes and hats...hopefully he doesn't use the knowledge to torment a Sunday School teacher.  I guess I'll know to be worried if he starts packing lots of extra paper in that secret pouch.

Anyway, if you've got specific questions go ahead and send me an email.  Basically I made the inside with all the pockets and everything I wanted and then sewed it inside out with the outside and some batting.  Then flipped it right side out.

I love how it turned out...

...and more importantly, Seth loves it.

You can see Becca's version here (It's not a full tutorial, but has some tips for making your own)...

Oh, and some of the extra Making Paper Hats fabric is part of my contribution to Swap B in the I-Spy Swap.  There are still a few spots if you want to join.  I'll have the rest of my fabric choices for the swap up tomorrow to tempt you a little more.

  5. So adorable! Makes me really want to make one! I have a question though, and maybe I missed it, but what are they supposed to use the crayons for? Is there paper in one of the pockets?
