Strawberry Kiss Shopkins Costume and Trick-or-Treat Bag

After much deliberation this year, Rebecca finally decided she wanted to dress up as a Shopkin for Halloween, and she fell in love with this Shopkin Strawberry Kiss Costume from Oriental Trading Company.  (Disclaimer:  Oriental Trading Company and Fairfield World provided me with free products to try and Fairfield World compensated me for this post.  However all thoughts, ideas, opinions, and enthusiasm are 100% my own.)  Besides Strawberry Kiss they also offer a Cupcake Queen costume.   Oriental Trading Company is definitely Halloween Headquarters with LOTS of other fun Halloween Costumes to choose from.

The Strawberry Kiss costume is wonderful on it's own, but we added a green T-shirt and red polka dot leggings underneath for added warm and comfort for wearing to school.  We also needed to make a few of our own accessories, including this super early Trick-or-Treating bag.  The sparkly red polka dots in the dress immediately made me think of the red metallic Oly-Fun™ and the bag only took about 20 minutes to make.  I've sided the bag to hold plenty of Halloween goodies to make your child happy...but small enough to fill up without TOO much trick-or-treating.  You can size up or down according to your needs.

Here's what you'll need to make your own:
1/2 Yard Metallic Red Oly-Fun ™
Scissors or Rotary Cutter and ruler
Sewing machine, thread, and related supplies.
Scraps of white, yellow and green oly-fun for the embellishiments (or purchase an Oly-Fun Variety Pack.)
Low-Temp Glue Gun and Glue
Double sided tape OR pins

Instructions:

I start by cutting out my embellishments.  I made a strawberry blossom and leaves.  I cut everything out through two layers of Oly-Fun™ so that I'd have doubles for the front and back.  Cut 2 five-petal flowers from white, 2 yellow center circles, and several green leaves.  I found it was easiest to cut out the general smooth shape of the leaf and then cut out the notches to make the edges look more like strawberry leaves.  From your red metallic Oly-Fun™ cut a 10" strip and two 4" inch strips.  They will start out 30" wide...trim all of them to 24".

The 4" strips will become our handles.  You don't want to iron oly-fun™ like you would fabric, so we're going to use the edge of our scissors to crease it.  Crease it down the middle.  Then open it up and crease each edge in approximately 1/2".

Fold back together with the 1/2" amounts folded inside.  Topstitch on both edges to keep straps closed.

Fold  each end of your larger strip down 2" and crease.Slide your straps in about 1 1/2 inches from each side.  I used double sided tape to hold in place, but you could easily use pins instead.

Fold the straps up.  Then stitch along the top and bottom of your fold.

With RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER, stitch along the sides of your bag.  Clip corners and turn right side out.

You're done!  Use your glue gun to attach embellishments.  Make sure your glue gun is SET TO LOW or you may melt your oly-fun™.

These aren't just for Halloween though.  These bags would also make great favors for your next Shopkins birthday party and any birthday girl would be excited to wear this costume for her special day.

These bags work great with Aluminor™ too!  Go here for details on this astronaut bag.

And to really top off the costume, you'll want to make some Strawberry Shoes (especially since they only take about 5 minutes.)  Get the details here.
