Falling in Love with Felt

I've never really used felt much. I've always kind of thought of it as "fake" fabric. Since I've always been more of a quilting type of seamstress, I've mostly used woven cotton. My sister, Katie, has been using felt for a while and makes adorable baby onesies and hair clippies with it, but I've never had much interest in it...until now.

I think I'm falling in love with felt.

With the puppet theater complete, we need puppets. I bought some felt-by-the-yard (I just love how all the colors look stacked up) at Joanns a few weeks ago when it was on sale 50%. I bought it to make puppets with, but went back for more colors when I started thinking of several other projects I wanted to do.

The things I like about it are...
  • It's cheap...especially at 50% and when you consider it's 72'' wide instead of the normal 45'' for other fabrics.
  • You don't have to worry about raw edges...this is kind of a new concept for me...but it's definitely growing on me.

So stay tuned for some felt projects. I've got some done, and some in progress, but since we've entered SAT season, I'm spending most of my free computer time to read millions (okay just hundreds) of SAT essays instead of writing up projects on my blog or finishing the others. I'm also itching to make some felt food, but that will probably have to wait until after the move.

  1. Ahh, felt. What love. The one downside to felt is that it tends to stretch if not cared for properly. I find a good blanket stitch usually combats this fairly well. Also, I feel quite famous. Makes me a little self conscious of how ugly I have left Sammy Jaybird for the past while. Perhaps I'll get rid of some of those old Farmer's Market posts. Ahem. But what are the other projects you want to do with your felt other than puppets? I'm quite curious now.
