I've shared bits and pieces of our Harry Potter Costumes in the past, but I haven't shared all the details in one place for putting together an easy Harry Potter Costume or a costume for one of your other favorite characters from the Harry Potter series.

Basics
If your child doesn't already have them in their wardrobe, you can pick up a few basics they should probably have in their wardrobe anyway:
  • White collared shirt
  • Black pants
  • Basic black shoes at the thrift store
  • Gray Sweater (optional)
My girls wore shirts that belonged to my son and it totally worked.  We bought shoes for my oldest at a children's resale shop, but my younger daughter was able to wear some of my son's old shoes...and she loved them so much that she wore them for months afterward.

The gray sweater is a nice touch, but you can pull off the costume without it, if you don't have one available.  I scoured the racks at our thrift store for a month or so and came up with a couple gray sweaters.  I had to be a bit creative with this one.  It's a bit small (made for an infant rather than 2-year-old, but that turned out well, so his costume didn't get too bulky.  You can add a doubly nice touch if you use embroidery thread to add a border to the sweater.  I added red and gold for Gryffindor to my girls sweaters.
Hogwarts School Robes
If you need a robe for a small child, I strongly recommend making them a robe out of an adult-large-black T-shirt.  They're really easy and take about 15 minutes.  You can find that Hogwarts Robe tutorial here.

Accessories
A few accessories can go a long way towards bringing your costume to life.
  •  Scar
  • Hogwarts House Tie
  • Hogwarts House Scarf
  • Magic Wand
  • Round Glasses
  • Spell Book
  • Accio Candy Bag for Trick or Treating
The great thing about putting together a Harry Potter costume is that most of the costumes comes down to gathering a few basics that can be picked up at the thrift store or made yourself.

Scar
I used a washable brown marker to add my little guys' scar.  Eyeliner pencil is a great option too.
Hogwarts House Tie
I made my kids' ties using a tutorial I found online.  (Sorry, I can't find it just now, but there are loads of them if you just do a Google search.  You can find red and gold striped fabric here.  You can find fabric for the other Hogwarts Houses on Spoonflower.  Of course, you could also order one of the official Hogwarts ties from online. {Affiliate link.}  You can also get away without a tie at all, if you have a House scarf.

Hogwarts House Scarf
A house scarf will make your house, more noticable from a distance, and provides the added bonus of keeping your child warm and snug if it ends up being a cold Halloween night for trick-or-treating.
I have a full tutorial for making the Hogwarts scarves here, or I also sell Hogwarts House scarves for all four houses in my Etsy Shop.

Magic Wand
My kids love helping to make wands.  You can easily craft them out of chopsticks, hot glue, and a little paint.  You can see how I made mine here.

Round Glasses
This is the one part of the costume, that I haven't figured out how to make myself...and it really is necessary if you're trying to make a Harry Costume.  We originally bought these thicker glasses because I thought they would hold up the best.  The worked fine for our little guy, but they are so thick that they give a bit a charactured look.

Later I ordered these thinner ones that would look more realistic and settled on these.  There were a couple of options that were cheaper, but I liked these because they had pads on the nose bridge {affiliate link} to make them more comfortable to wear.

Spell Books
You can print your own spell books from here.  They don't do a lot to add to the costume itself, but they are REALLY helpful in getting your kid in character...it teaches them all sorts of useful spells.

Accio Candy Bag
And for a the perfect finishing touch...you can also add an Accio Books or Accio Candy bag.  You can get the pattern and tutorial for making them here.  I also sell these bags in my Etsy Shop here.
