Harry Potter Potions Ornament

I know the timing on this isn't great...but I didn't even get it made until after Christmas and I'm afraid if I wait until next Christmas, I'll forget....so here's one you can pin for next year.

Katie started reading the Harry Potter books a few months ago.  We'd been telling her they were too hard, but she pulled the first one off our shelf and started reading them anyway.  It just goes to show that as capable as we think she is...we still underestimate her.  She's now read up through book 4 and has read books 3 and 4 twice.

Anyway, I thought a Harry Potter themed ornament would be good for her this year, since I try to find or make ornaments that show something about what our kids like or did that year.

And you can make one too...

I'd bought these little jars at the craft store a couple months ago.  I wasn't quite sure what I'd used them for...but they were too cute to pass up for 50 cents a piece.  You'll also need some jewelry wire, needle-nose plier/wire cutters, ribbon, a large needle, and glue.  (I used E-6000 glue because I really didn't want the cork to come off...polyjuice potion after all, takes a month or so to make start-to-finish).
Since I'd bought my beads for something else originally, my beads were multi-colored.  I started by separating them by color.  Do yourself a favor and just buy single color beads.  Veritaserum is supposed to be clear...but I used silver and gold beads.  The color of polyjuice potion depends on the person it will turn you into.  I used pink and purple beads...figuring maybe it will turn you into Fancy Nancy?...someone cute and girly anyway.

After I had my beads ready, I used a large needle to poke a hole through the cork.
Then I could put my jewelry wire through it.
Bend and cut the wire off underneath, so it can't pull back through the hole.
Glue the cork on.
And tie a ribbon on the two hooks.  I added a touch of glue to the ribbon knots to make sure they wouldn't come undone.
I got the veritaserum label from here and the polyjuice potion label came from here and made them smaller and printed them out on labels and then cut them out.  (Both of those links have labels for lots of other potions as well.

Then hang over a branch on the tree.
I found looping the ribbon around the branch worked nicely to separate the bottles just a bit...or draping them over two close branches works well..or you can give them separate ribbons.

Katie loved them.  (But not as much as she loved the Gryffindor scarf her birthmom crocheted for her for Christmas.)

Katie's birthday is in a couple weeks and she's requested a Harry Potter themed party...so stay tuned for more Harry Potter projects in the next few weeks.

I don't currently carry potions ornaments, but I do have a variety of other Harry Potter themed Christmas ornaments  my Etsy shop.

I have lots of Harry Potter inspired gifts and fun things in my shop.  The selection is always changing.
